This book is developed from a set of lecture notes for a course taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and the System Development Corporation during the three years 1960-1962. These classes consisted of (i) programmers with an interest in the theoretical aspects of data processing, (ii) curious mathematicians, and (iii) computer logical designers with an interest in the more abstract phases of their art. It is not surprising, therefore, that this text has been written with these three groups in mind.
