Born in London in 1950, Kim McCone studied classics as an undergraduate at Oxford University, from which he also received his doctorate in 1979 after spending five years abroad on scholarships, two studying Indo-European linguistics at Hamburg and Freiburg universities in Germany and a further three concentrating upon Old and Middle Irish at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. He was appointed to a lectureship at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, in 1979 and succeeded Pádraig Ó Fiannachta in the Chair of Old and Middle Irish there in 1982, a position which he held for 28 years until he took early retirement in 2010 from what had been the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, since 1997. He is an honorary life member of the Linguistic Society of America and the author of a numerous articles as well as several books on comparative Celtic linguistics and medieval Irish language and literature.
