Novelty Printers and Publishers , 2002. — 80 p.Dhivehi (or Divehi) is the language spoken by a population of two hundred and seventy thousand people living in the Republic of Maldives, an nation of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is an Indo-Aryan language closely related to Sinhalese of Sri Lanka.Very little has been written on the Dhivehi language especially in a language other than Dhivehi. Therefore there has been little opportunity, for those who do not speak the language, to acquire any information about the Dhivehi language.Hence my aim in writing this book is to give introduction to and an overview of the Dhivehi language, its origin and historical development to the reader who is unacquainted with the language. I have tried to look at the present status of Dhivehi language in Maldivian society today as well as give
the reader a brief glimpse into the future of the language. It is in no way intended to be an in depth linguistic study of the language.
