Prentice-Hall, 1966. — 196 p.
This anthology has been prepared to afford a closer study of critical source material by photographers from the turn of the century to the
present. Surveying approximately one hundred years of the literature of photography, it presents points of view which have contributed to
the development of contemporary photographic expression.
The book is arranged alphabetically by photographer. The reader may, by consulting the Table of Contents, follow a chronological
development of the material presented. Each photographer is introduced by a brief quotation which is central to his concern; beyond
this introductory statement all articles are quoted in full. An index of biographical notes and a selected bibliography have been prepared
on each contributor for additional reference. A short entry form has been adopted in citing the bibliographies (unless otherwise stated,
place of publication is New York City).
I wish to extend my appreciation to the photographers represented for permission to reproduce copyrighted material; without their cooperation this anthology would not have been possible.
And to Rosalinde Fuller for consent to publish material by Francis Bru-guiere; Georgia O’Keeffe and Doris Bry for permission to publish articles by Alfred Stieglitz; Dorothy Norman for release of “Four Happenings,” by Alfred Stieglitz, originally published in Twice-a-Year; Sybil Moholy-Nagy for articles by Moholy-Nagy; Cole Weston for release of material by Edward Weston; Paul Taylor for release of material by Dorothea Lange.
To the George Eastman House and its Director, Beaumont Newhall, I wish to express my gratitude for an environment which encouraged and enabled me to complete the necessary research for this anthology. For their invaluable assistance, I wish to thank Alice Andrews and Thomas Barrow of the George Eastman House Staff and Robert Bretz, Elizabeth Kimbrough, and Maureen Sweeney for their aid in proofing the bibliographic entries.
